SPOKANE, Wash. -Spokane Police say a man has died outside the Spokane Public Library downtown.

Officers were called to the scene at 906 W. Main Ave. around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Details about what happened are limited at the moment, but officers on the scene say they are investigating the death as a homicide until they can prove that it is not, as is protocol.

Police say the man fell five stories to the sidewalk below and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation continues, but police say based on information they were able to gather on the scene from witnesses, it appears what happened was a tragic accident.

The Spokane Medical Examiner's Office will release the identity of the man at a later date.

Spokane Mayor David Condon and Spokane Public Library Director Andrew Chanse released the following statement:

“We send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the individual who passed away at the Downtown Library today. We are saddened by what appears to be a tragic accident.”

The downtown branch of the Spokane Public Library will be closed for the rest of the day Wednesday while police continue their investigation.
