Taxpayer money goes missing in Spokane County

(STORY IMAGE:KHQ.COM)

According to sources the amount of money that's missing may total more than $1 million and that the bookkeeping problem dates back years.

The state auditor is now investigating. Their office first received a loss of funds report from the Spokane County Department of Risk Management back in August. The risk management office handles and often settles liability and workers compensation cases filed against the county.

A worker who had been with Spokane County Risk Management for 20 years was fired from her job in May - but a county spokesman wouldn't say whether the termination had anything to do with the missing money.

Officials would not say if this case involves theft or embezzlement. The now-former employee has not been charged. KHQ will keep you updated on this developing situation.
