SPOKANE, Wash. -Spokane voters rejected a proposal that would have fined certain oil and coal trains traveling through downtown Spokane.
Proposition 2 was failing with 42 percent of the vote in favor of the measure on Tuesday night. Opponents of Prop 2 said the measure was illegal and could cost the city money in court battles.
Last summer, following the derailment of an oil train in Mosier, Oregon, City Council President Ben Stuckart called for stricter oil train rules.
The measure would allow the city to fine the owners of rail cars $261 per car that traveled through downtown for not meeting certain standards.
